About Jakarta

Jakarta is Indonesia's economic and cultural hub — a city of contrasts between modern skyscrapers and the historic Kota Tua district, between luxury malls and traditional markets. From Kualanamu, many direct flights daily.

What to Explore

Highlights in Jakarta

Highlight 1

Old Town (Kota Tua)

Long before it was called Jakarta, this district was Batavia — the colonial trading capital of the Dutch VOC built in 1619 on the ruins of the razed Jayakarta. For over three centuries, Batavia served as the most powerful colonial center in the archipelago, and its legacy remains vivid in Kota Tua today. Fatahillah Square, anchored by the old city hall built over 300 years ago (now the Jakarta History Museum), is the perfect starting point for exploring the district. Surrounding it stand the Wayang Museum, the Ceramics and Fine Art Museum, and the Kota Intan Bridge constructed by VOC in 1628 — one of Indonesia's oldest bridges. Walking north, the historic Sunda Kelapa Harbour still berths traditional Bugis pinisi wooden ships — a scene that feels like stepping back into the age of the spice trade. Colonial-style cafés operating inside historic buildings, including the legendary Cafe Batavia, complete the experience of wandering through a Batavia that lives on.

Highlight 2

National Monument (Monas)

Standing firm at the heart of Jakarta since its inauguration in 1975, the National Monument — Monas — is Indonesia's most iconic symbol of independence. Conceived by President Sukarno in 1955 as an emblem of the nation's undying spirit, the 132-meter monument is crowned with a golden flame crafted from 35 kilograms of pure gold — gleaming under the Jakarta sun and visible from across the city. Inside the monument's base, the National History Museum holds 51 dioramas narrating Indonesia's journey from prehistoric times to the independence era. An elevator carries visitors to the observation deck at 115 meters, where a 360-degree panorama of all of Jakarta unfolds — from the CBD skyscrapers to Jakarta Bay in the distance. Surrounding it, the expansive Merdeka Square serves as the city's green lung and a beloved recreation space for Jakartans.

Highlight 3

Thousand Islands

Just a few dozen kilometers from Jakarta's dense and noisy center, the Thousand Islands come as a delightful surprise — an archipelago of around 150 small islands in Jakarta Bay offering clear blue waters, living coral reefs, and peaceful white sandy beaches. From Marina Ancol in North Jakarta, ferries and speedboats carry visitors to various islands in 30 minutes to 2 hours. Pari Island is celebrated for its Virgin Sand Beach and snorkeling spots rich in marine biodiversity. Tidung Island charms visitors with its iconic Bridge of Love and a laid-back atmosphere perfect for cycling around the island. Harapan Island is the favorite base for divers and snorkelers, thanks to the hundreds of uninhabited satellite islands surrounding it with exceptionally well-preserved coral reefs. The Thousand Islands prove that a tropical paradise doesn't have to be far — just a short crossing from Jakarta.
