Highlights in Jambi
Highlight 1
Muaro Jambi Temple Complex
Muaro Jambi is one of the largest and most important Buddhist archaeological sites in Southeast Asia โ a temple complex from the 7th to 12th centuries stretching 7.5 kilometers along the Batanghari riverbank. The complex is a legacy of the Melayu and Srivijaya Kingdoms, which in their heyday served as a prominent center of Buddhist education, even thought to have been visited by the famous Chinese monk I Tsing on his journey to India. Within the area covering more than 2,600 hectares, there are at least 82 menapo (temple mounds), but only a small portion has been excavated and restored โ meaning most of the complex still lies buried beneath soil and forest, waiting to be discovered. Restored temples such as Candi Gumpung, Candi Tinggi, and Candi Kembar Batu stand among large trees that shade the site in a quiet and magical atmosphere. With minimal visitors, Muaro Jambi offers a rare experience โ exploring a large-scale archaeological site in near-total silence.
Highlight 2
Lake Kerinci & Mount Kerinci
In the far west of Jambi Province, within the Kerinci Seblat National Park โ one of Indonesia's largest national parks โ lie two extraordinary natural wonders. Lake Kerinci is Southeast Asia's highest volcanic lake, sitting at 783 meters above sea level and surrounded by terraced green tea plantations โ its scenery is calming and far from city noise. Directly behind it, Mount Kerinci stands tall at 3,805 meters above sea level, making it Indonesia's highest volcano and the highest peak on Sumatra. The mountain is one of Indonesia's most prestigious trekking destinations โ the trail begins from Kersik Tuo Village and takes about 2 days return to reach the summit. From the peak of Kerinci on a clear day, you can witness a 360-degree panorama encompassing the Indian Ocean, the Strait of Malacca, and the endless expanse of Sumatra's tropical rainforest.
