About Jeddah

Jeddah is the main gateway to Mecca and Medina as well as a historic city with the Al-Balad district listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The blend of ancient Arab buildings, traditional markets, and a modern Corniche along the Red Sea makes Jeddah a rich and unique destination.

What to Explore

Highlights in Jeddah

Highlight 1

Al-Balad — Historic Jeddah

Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2014, Al-Balad is the historic heart of Jeddah that has stood for over 1,400 years. The most distinctive feature is the Rawasheen — intricately carved teak wooden balconies jutting outward from the facades of tall multi-story coral-stone buildings, functioning as a natural ventilation system and privacy screen for those inside. Each balcony carries unique carvings, making every building a work of art in itself. Through the winding narrow alleys, traditional spice markets (Al-Alawi) still operate selling oud, bakhoor, and fragrant Arabic coffee; glittering gold shops stand beside fresh juice stalls and vendors frying hot zalabia doughnuts. Visit in the late afternoon before Maghrib prayer when golden light reflects off the aged cream walls, creating an extraordinarily photogenic atmosphere. Entry to Al-Balad is free and accessible by taxi from central Jeddah.

Highlight 2

Jeddah Corniche

Stretching 30 kilometers along the Red Sea shore, the Jeddah Corniche is one of the longest and most spectacular waterfront promenades in the Middle East. This coastal boulevard connects parks, sports areas, open-air art galleries, seafront restaurants, and modern-style mosques facing the sea. The iconic landmark here is the King Fahd Fountain — the world's tallest fountain, shooting water up to 312 meters above sea level, higher than the Eiffel Tower. Illuminated by 500 floodlights every night, it creates a dramatic spectacle visible from 30 km away. In the late afternoon to evening, the Corniche buzzes with local families relaxing, cycling, or enjoying the sea breeze. It's the best place to feel the daily pulse of Jeddah's life — far from the city's formal image. Sunrise over the Red Sea from the Corniche is one of the most unforgettable visual experiences.
