Highlights in Muscat

Highlight 1

Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque

Built over six years and inaugurated in 2001, Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque is one of the largest and most beautiful mosques in the world โ€” an architectural masterpiece blending Persian, Mughal Indian, and Omani traditions into a breathtaking complex. The mosque can accommodate over 20,000 worshippers across its main prayer hall and outer courtyards. The main hall is adorned with a massive Persian carpet measuring 70 x 60 meters, woven over 4 years by 600 Iranian craftsmen using 1.7 million knots per square meter โ€” one of the largest carpets in the world. Suspended above it is a gold-plated chandelier 14 meters tall, decorated with 1,122 Swarovski crystal spheres. Non-Muslim visitors are welcome Saturday through Thursday from 08:00โ€“11:00 in modest clothing โ€” women are required to wear an abaya provided at the entrance. The mosque is just 15 minutes from central Muscat.

Highlight 2

Mutrah Souq & Corniche

Mutrah Souq is one of the oldest traditional markets in the Arabian Gulf โ€” its winding lanes are packed with stalls selling frankincense and bakhoor (Arab incense) whose fragrance fills the air the moment you enter, finely carved Omani silver jewelry, woven fabrics, ceramics, and Omani handicrafts. The market has functioned as a trading hub for centuries when merchant ships docked at Mutrah Port, and to this day retains its authentic original character. Just in front of it stretches the Mutrah Corniche โ€” an elegant bay-side boulevard lined with palm trees, park benches, and direct views of large vessels anchored in the calm waters of Muscat Bay. At the end of the corniche stand Al Jalali and Al Mirani, two magnificent 16th-century Portuguese forts guarding the mouth of the bay. Visit in the late afternoon when a cool sea breeze blows and locals begin to gather โ€” a warm and friendly atmosphere that is quintessentially Omani.
