What to Explore

Highlights in Yogyakarta

Highlight 1

Borobudur Temple

Built in the 9th century by the Syailendra Dynasty, Borobudur is the world's largest Buddhist temple and one of the most magnificent monuments ever built by humanity โ€” now listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Constructed from 2 million volcanic stone blocks without mortar, the temple has 9 terraces symbolizing the levels of Buddhist cosmology, 2,672 intricately carved relief panels narrating Dharma teachings and life of that era, and 504 Buddha statues enshrined within 72 bell-shaped perforated stupas. The most magical experience at Borobudur is watching the sunrise from nearby Setumbu Hill โ€” as the first light of dawn gradually illuminates the stupa peaks emerging from the morning mist that blankets the green valley below. Borobudur is about 1 hour's drive from central Yogyakarta.

Prambanan Temple

Standing majestically on the plains between Yogyakarta and Klaten, Prambanan is Indonesia's largest Hindu temple complex and one of the greatest in Southeast Asia โ€” listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Built in the 9th century by King Rakai Pikatan and dedicated to the Trimurti โ€” Brahma (Creator), Vishnu (Preserver), and Shiva (Destroyer) โ€” the complex originally comprised 240 temples spread across dozens of hectares. The Shiva Temple as the main structure soars 47 meters with a 3-meter Shiva Mahadeva statue enshrined within. Every full moon night from May to October, the Ramayana Ballet is performed on an open-air stage against the illuminated backdrop of Prambanan temples โ€” an unforgettable fusion of dance, gamelan music, and ancient architecture. Prambanan is just 17 kilometers from central Yogyakarta, easily reached by Grab or Trans Jogja bus.

Malioboro & Kraton

If there is one street that captures the soul of Yogyakarta, it is Malioboro โ€” the main boulevard stretching from Tugu Yogyakarta in the north to the Kraton square in the south, once a royal processional route adorned with flowers. Along its busy sidewalks, street vendors offer batik in various motifs and qualities, Kotagede silverwork, leather crafts, wayang kulit shadow puppets, and warm bakpia pastries that are the quintessential Yogyakarta souvenir. When evening falls after 8 PM, lesehan floor-seating stalls appear along the roadside serving gudeg โ€” Yogyakarta's signature dish of young jackfruit slow-cooked for hours in coconut milk and spices until it turns a deep reddish-brown with a distinctive sweet-savory flavor. At the southern end of Malioboro, the Kraton Yogyakarta stands as the center of the still-active Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat Sultanate under Sultan Hamengku Buwono X, featuring classic Javanese-style pavilions, gamelan music performed daily, and royal collections open to the public.

Travel Tip

Visit Borobudur at sunrise โ€” the atmosphere is entirely different from daytime, far quieter and the light is far more beautiful.
